Mahmoud Mumtaz, Chairman of the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA) participated in the meetings of the 21st session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Competition Law and Policy of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which was held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mumtaz spoke during the opening session of the meetings, reviewing the most prominent legislative and institutional developments for the protection of competition in Egypt and the efforts made by the agency during the last period to implement competition law and policies, including what has been implemented and approved for the 2021/25 strategy, as well as the plans to support competition policies within the market.

He explained that, based on what has been applied from that strategy, a number of anti-competitive practices have been confronted and combated in various sectors and markets, especially those that directly affect citizens, noting that a special department has been established working to combat collusion between competitors, whether by monitoring the various contractual processes or providing workshops to raise awareness among contracting officials.

The head of the Competition Protection Authority also spoke about the “Economic Investigation and Review” department, which works to establish databases for various economic sectors, develop statistical programming packages for data processing and analysis, and measure the impact of the agency’s decisions on various markets and sectors.
