Earlier today TAG Heuer and Watches of Switzerland Group debuted a new Carrera timepiece, exclusive to Goldsmiths, Mappin & Webb and Watches of Switzerland showrooms in the US and the UK, as well as online.
While black-out-of-white ‘panda’ dial chronographs are nothing new for TAG Heuer – ditto white-out-of-black ‘reverse pandas’ – this latest limited-edition Carrera brings a certain vintage-inspired je ne sais quoi.
The story of the Carrera is legendary. Back in 1963, Jack Heuer created the watch in celebration of the famous Carrera Panamericana, considered to be the world’s most dangerous automobile race. The watch was designed as a tribute to the thrill-taking, speed-loving drivers who competed in the challenge.
Inspired by 1970s classics such as the ref. 2447 SN, the new watch features a 42mm steel case housing an off-white dial with black sub-dials at 3 and 9 o’clock. Black hour markers and chapter ring and a small date window at 6 o’clock complete the dial arrangement.
Designed for easy reading, the original Carrera featured a small bezel and large dial with luminescent markers and hands. And that is exactly what the new model offers – the perfect layout for racing enthusiasts combined with the latest horological innovation.
Craig Bolton, president of the Watches of Switzerland Group UK & Europe, said, “We have been in partnership with TAG Heuer for over 40 years; an enduring partnership which has seen us celebrate many key anniversaries together or significant launches likes this new Exclusive. We know fans of the brand will appreciate a timepiece that encompasses the driving ethos of TAG Heuer and the brand’s strong ties to motorsport.”
Within the case, which is water resistant to 100 metres, beats the Heuer 02 calibre with an 80-hour power reserve. A chronograph with a true racing pedigree, the watch is stylish enough to wear on any occasion – especially when paired with its perforated black leather strap (a bracelet version is also available).
But fans of the Watches of Switzerland Group TAG Heuer Carrera Exclusive will have to be quick – just 125 examples will be available in each version. The watch is priced at £5,250 on strap and £5,350 on bracelet.
