British Staycation Spot is a ‘Marvel’ and Offers a Taste of Mountainous Switzerland

Europe is full of unique holiday destinations loved for their idyllic landscapes and stunning views, but Britons don’t need to look beyond the UK to feel like they’re abroad this summer. In fact, those seeking a slice of mountainous Switzerland can find a close match in England.

Switzerland is renowned for its breathtaking mountainous landscape and rich history, but also for being one of the most expensive countries in the world.

While many justify the expense with the country’s unbeatable views, Britons may be pleased to know they can get a taste of the European destination right here in the UK.

The dual-town of Lymouth and Lynton can be found in North Devon, on the south coast of England.

Alex said: “With the blue waters, leafy green surrounding forrested valleys and the tallest cliffs in England you can see why this is known as ‘Little Switzerland’.”

Similar to Switzerland itself, the seaside spot shares some of the European destination’s standout features.

From distinctive architecture to astonishing landscapes, the Devon towns were given their nickname by locals who noticed the Swiss-inspired aesthetic.

Located on the very northern edge of Exmoor National Park in North Devon, and around just five miles from the Devon and Somerset border, Lymouth and Lynton are situated at the bottom of the very same hill.

The unique spot combines both Georgian and Victorian influence, and have been repeatedly named among the most beautiful spots in the county.

According to the TikTok travel blogger, the Devon spot was “a complete marvel” to him when he first discovered it a few years ago.

He added: “It remains one of my favourite places to come in my favourite UK county.”

Both towns are home to an array of independent businesses and boast panoramic views of the Jurassic Coast, but one of the key features are the two rivers that flow through Lynmouth.

Also home to a small harbour and a shingle bay called Blacklands Beach, the Devon destination is lined with chocolate-box properties and small fishing cottages.

Museums, amenities and the local Lynton Cinema are steeped in history which add to the quaint charm of “Little Switzerland”.

One of the most popular attractions is the circular walk around the scenic town of Lynmouth. The outward leg follows the valley of the East Lyn River while the return, on the route of the Two Moors Way and Tarka Trail, is a high, airy walk along the valley top.

The trail ends in Lynmouth, North Devon, and is easily accessible by car or regular buses which run to Lynmouth from nearby spots including Barnstaple, Ilfracombe, Taunton and Minehead.
